On Thursday, The New York Times dropped a hit piece about Elon Musk that would make Taylor Lorenz green with envy.

The Headline “Elon Musk’s Past, a South Africa Rife With Misinformation and White Privilege” was posted by the outlet with the tweet, “Elon Musk grew up in elite white communities in South Africa, detached from apartheid’s atrocities and surrounded by anti-Black propaganda. He sees his takeover of Twitter as a free speech win but in his youth did not suffer the effects of misinformation.”

The Times’ attempt to smear Musk as some kind of bigoted, apartheid-supporting racist was lackluster. Even its own reporting on the subject, as Townhall notes, managed to refute everything the headline and tweet were meant to suggest.

The internet was quick to pick up on the failed mudslinging and took the Times to task.

The article itself, which was obviously meant to paint Musk as a racist, literally says, “Black schoolmates recall that he spent time with Black friends.” It adds that his parents were members of the anti-apartheid Progressive Party, and that, instead of participating in South Africa’s mandatory military service—which “would have forced him to participate in the apartheid regime”—he left the country after high school.

Even critics of Musk came to his defense in light of this obvious hatchet job.

And Mama Musk.

The egregiousness of the headline sparked some to reinterpret it to spotlight the grotesque logic of the piece as a whole.

Strangely enough, although they didn’t choose to go with the aforementioned suggested headline, they did choose to go in and change it after some of the backlash.

The vitriol the media has decided to unleash on Musk since his purchase of Twitter is truly astonishing, and he hasn’t even taken over the platform yet! This piece was meant for those libs who never read past the headlines, who immediately retweet it with comments decrying Musk as a bigot out to unleash right-wing hate on Twitter. Luckily, they were caught in the act.

However, I seriously doubt it will do anything to dissuade the empty-headed leftists who have already made up their minds about the once climate change warrior, leftist darling.
