PARIS: Police Officers Shot by Probable Terrorist, Islamic State Claims Credit...
Disclaimers up front, everything is moving fast so consider this post a collection of what we know. If you remember when we wrote about the attack in London, information was all over the place. The commentary we offer here will be about what we know. Which is very little.
A man in Paris opened fire on the police...
The assailant in the Paris shooting “got out of the vehicle and shot at the police vehicle with an automatic weapon, killing one policeman instantly,” French Ministry of Interior Spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet told BFMTV, a CNN affiliate network in France. The attack started around 9 p.m. local time in Paris, when a vehicle stopped next to a police vehicle stationed on the side of the road. Policemen were both inside and outside the vehicle. The shooter got out of his car and started firing at police, Brandet said on BFMTV.French anti-terror prosecutors and the National Intelligence Service are now opening an investigation to determine the nature of the incident on the Champs Elysees, according to the Paris Prosecutor’s Office in a text to CNN.
This means they are looking at terror as a possible motive in this attack.
Of course the Islamic State is claiming responsibility:

Here's what we know of the attack itself, from Reuters:
"An automatic weapon was used against police, a weapon of war," the spokesman, Pierre-Henry Brandet, told reporters, adding that the "terrorist threat" in the country remained high.
Brandet said the shooting started at shortly after 9 p.m. when a car stopped alongside a stationary police car. "A man immediately got out and opened fire on the police car, fatally wounding a police officer ... He also wounded a second one, it would seem very seriously," he said.
The identity of the attacker, who was killed, had not yet been definitely established, he said.
Also according to Reuters, the suspect was known to authorities:

There are pictures of the "suspect" being spread on Twitter, but I've yet to see a source attributed to the photo. When I see it, I'll upload it to this post.

And of course...
It doesn't seem to end. France has a major problem with terrorism. A problem they're sharing with many European countries which have taken in migrants from Islamic countries. Some news organizations are refusing to draw that conclusion. We're not.
It's easy to jump to the terrorism conclusion, because there's a pattern...this year...and in France specifically (see Paris Airport Attacker Was Suspected of ‘Islamic Extremism’ and ISIS Raids Church in Normandy, France. Beheads Priest).
As always, we're praying for Paris, yes, but we're also praying something is done to stop these attacks outside of just offering sympathy.
