Do you like to light up the sacred green before you light up the local shooting range? The police are disappointed in you. As are your parents. But more importantly, the police disapprove. And if you live in Hawaii, they want you to turn in your guns while you reflect on your poor life decisions.

Hawaiian authorities have asked medical marijuana users to "voluntarily surrender" firearms due to their medicinal status. This may mark the first time a law enforcement entity has moved to confiscate guns from cannabis patients.

Marijuana users in Honolulu are expected to turn over all firearms and ammunition to the state within 30 days of receiving the notice, according to a letter signed by police chief Susan Ballard.

You may be scratching your head right about now. Pot is legal in Hawaii, yes. But apparently there's a federal technicality which is supposed to prevent stoners medicinal users of the sacred plant from being able to own guns.

The state's first medical marijuana dispensary opened in August, but federal law prevents patients who ingest cannabis from owning a firearm. [T]he Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) issued a letter in 2011:

Any person who uses or is addicted to marijuana, regardless of whether his or her State has passed legislation authorizing marijuana use for medicinal purposes, is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance, and is prohibited by Federal law from possessing firearms and ammunition. - ATF

I can already feel Mary Jane's beaus getting their panties in a twist. Prepare thy panties for even more twisting. Because in case you were wondering, no, the law doesn't apply to alcoholics. They're free to booze it up on the regular while owning guns. The injustice of it all.

This is certainly an interesting development for those who smoke the devil's lettuce. Uncle Sam wants your ganja-riddled guns. Just another thing to add to the long list of things potheads should be paranoid about. You know, along with ceiling vents and radio waves.
