I was born in Minnesota. We don’t really have a whole lot to brag about, especially now that half the state seems to either be rubble or on fire every other day. What we do have is Prince. So, it piqued my curiosity when I saw “The Mandalorian” star Gina Carano tweeting out an old video of the legendary artist.

The video is of Prince speaking after receiving an award. I can’t be too sure which award ceremony it is—Prince won many awards during his career. Suffice it to say the award doesn’t matter. It’s what he says at the podium that matters.

“Don’t be fooled by the internet. It’s cool to get on the computer, but don’t let the computer get on you. It’s cool to use the computer. Don’t let the computer use you. Y’all saw the Matrix. There’s a war going on. The battlefield is in the mind, and the price is the soul.”

Prince’s words have proven prophetic. It would seem we haven’t heeded his warning, and now the internet is literally becoming some people’s reality. Prince would not approve.

Social media has definitely exasperated whatever issues Prince was seeing in the past. I remember when I was still a kid, the most interesting thing about the internet was Yahoo instant messenger. I could only imagine what Prince might say if he saw what was going on right now, what with the Metaverse becoming a thing.

Perhaps we should all think about how much we actually use our computers and how much of life we are actually sacrificing just trying to get a few more likes from people we don’t even know. Just something to think about.
