Progressive Seattle Passes Useless Gun Control Tax Law
Remember, it's the thought, not factually proven statistics, that counts.
On Monday, the deep blue liberal Mecca of Seattle passed a useless and arbitrary gun control law by way of sales tax on gun and ammunition. Because the stupid gun owners of Seattle won't go outside the city limits to get better deals. Riiiiight.
Seattle City Council unanimously approved 'Gun Violence Tax' that charges $25 for every firearm legally sold in Seattle on Monday. The council adopted the tax on an 8-0 vote Monday, along with a companion measure to require mandatory reporting of lost or stolen firearms.
Uh, see the problem here? The measure charges tax on legally sold firearms. The tax would affect people who purchase guns. Legally. Those freaking gun nuts who go through all the legal motions are so ruthless, constantly breaking the laws. Wait...
Not surprisingly, gun-sellers have promised to move out of the city limits rather than passing the tax onto their customers. Because they're such heartless bastards. So the $300,000 the "experts" expect to make on this tax will just pack up and leave town. So much for generating revenue.
Which, of course, is the entire point. This gun tax won't solve any problems, gun violence or non-gun violence, at all. It's purely symbolic. Seattle's City Council may as well have piled in their fleet of Priuses, climbed to the top of the Space Needle with a bull horn and yelled, "WE CARE! PLEASE LOVE US!"
"By providing for gun violence research with a tax on the sale of guns and bullets, and requiring gun owners to report lost or stolen firearms, Seattle is actively responding to the gun violence that is devastating our society," Washington Center for Gun Responsibility Executive Director Renee Hopkins said.
Oh right, forgot to mention that they're hoping the tax revenue earned on the "Gun Violence Tax" will fund gun violence research. Because that makes sense. Also, Renee, if you're reading this, that little missile shaped thing you put in a gun is called a cartridge. A bullet is what comes out of the gun. Educate yo' self.
One more tiny little detail... This new gun violence tax law, might be...how do I say this, illegal:
Washington state prohibits local governments from adopting laws related to firearms unless those local ordinances are specifically authorized by state law. City Attorney Pete Holmes said Monday that the tax measure is allowed by the city's taxing authority — a proposition disputed by Alan Gottlieb, co-founder of the Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation. He noted that in 2010, Seattle dropped a rule banning guns in parks after opponents sued on the grounds that the local measure was pre-empted by state law.
So there's that. But hey, kudos to the Seattle City Council for making a statement about how ignorant they are on facts, or how guns help level the playing field for women. But at least they care.
Caring is sharing. Sharing stupidity.
