We've all heard horror stories of weddings gone wrong: the bride's dress doesn't fit, family drama escalates, maybe someone gets cold feet. Well, this one takes the cake. Or in this case, baklava. A Kurdish woman living in Germany was being forced into an arranged marriage. She rightfully declined. Not because the dude was a layabout who played World of Warcraft all day. No, she mostly didn't want to enter holy matrimony with her cousin. Sounds pretty reasonable. Her uncles disagreed. So they murdered her. At a wedding.

The woman's father, identified as Ghazi H... said Shilan was forced into an arranged marriage with her cousin, Sefin, which she refused. Ghazi's two brothers, Numan H. and H. Hassan, had organized it and decided to take revenge on Shilan for her refusal. "They decided to take revenge, to continue the tradition," Ghazi H. wrote. Ghazi H. said she was killed with three shots to the head at the reception.

"To continue the tradition."

Ah, the old marry-your-cousin-or-die tradition.

The woman's father... posted an image of his daughter Shilan in a pool of blood on the floor, along with a short obituary. "She died right in the prime of her life, as a victim of an insidious betrayal and custom," he wrote.

This is the custom of a religion of peace... and incest. And brutal beatings. And rape. Murder. Female oppression. But mostly peace. The woman deserved to die for not wanting to marry her cousin. The father himself said "they seem to forget that we are living in Europe" and "she died as a victim of an insidious custom." Custom = a tradition synonymous with a particular group of people. They seem to forget we're living in Europe. Right, so in Europe the custom is "Don't kill women who'd rather not marry their cousin." But it would've been totally acceptable in Not-Europe? Say, like, Syria or Iran? Dually noted...

Taking a page out of Obama's book, how many more people have to die before we can officially say that there's a link between Islam and violence?
