Oh no, you guys! Mike Pence is OPPOSING RFK Jr's nomination as HHS Chairman
Donald Trump's boldest decision was to name former Democrat presidential nominee turned former independent presidential nominee Robert Kennedy Jr. as his pick for Health and Human Service Secretary. Not everyone is on board, pointing to RFK Jr's views on abortion. The most, I guess, "prominent" name to speak out is former Vice President Mike Pence. Remember that guy?
His organization, Advancing American Freedom, is calling on other Republicans to reject Trump's nominee.
The letter from the conservative advocacy group Advancing American Freedom, first reported Wednesday by Daily Wire, criticized Kennedy as being “pro-abortion,” specifically over his past support for abortions later in pregnancy. This position is “completely out of step with the strong, pro-life record of the first Trump Administration,” the group wrote.
“While RFK Jr. has made certain overtures to pro-life leaders that he would be mindful of their concerns at HHS,” the AAF said in their letter, “there is little reason for confidence at this time.”
I know what most of you are thinking. Mike Pence?
Pence isn't the only one on the right who feels this way. And I get it, but there is a bigger picture at play here that Republicans, conservatives, MAGA, and anyone in between have to consider. We ran into this a little with the H1-B visa drama—an issue that, to be clear, Elon, Vivek, and the tech bros were in the wrong about.
Also to be clear, I disagree with RFK Jr's view on abortion.
Donald Trump won because he put together a coalition that bypassed our usual ideological lines. The vast majority of it—dare I say the part that dragged us across the finish line—was RFK Jr. and his supporters. The trend is usually that different factions within the Republican Party needed to find common ground. Now, it's people outside the party with whom we still agree on key issues.
To quote my colleague Neil, we used to compromise with the Rockefeller Republicans, but they all went hardcore Bulwark Democrats. We're now compromising with the crunchy granola liberals. If this new Trump coalition is going to stay together, they have to feel they have a seat at the table if they are to keep supporting this side.
RFK is wrong about abortion. I get the concern. I share it. I'd be more concerned if Donald Trump and especially JD Vance (the President and Vice President) weren't right about abortion. Not to mention the Dobbs decision.
The more significant issue, and the common ground we all share, is RFK Jr. 's desire to hold Big Pharma, the alphabet agencies, and the healthcare industry accountable. That alone, especially after all we experienced during the pandemic, is what we should unite and rally around.
