Rob Schneider "Responds" to Selma Hayek's Call for Equal Pay
Equal Pay in Hollywood is back (see Jennifer Lawrence Angers Feminists on ‘Equal Pay’: ‘I Blame Myself…’ and Ronda Rousey DESTROYS Feminist Reporter on ‘Equal Pay’ Myth…). Looks like liberal outrage is like fashion. Nothing goes out of style, everything just gets recycled. In which case "celebrities whine about pay" is like bell bottoms and shaggy hair. You just can't understand why anyone would do such a thing.
We can thank Selma Hayek for the pay gap reboot. Ms. Hayek has a simple solution. It's not encouraging actresses to ask for more money. Or encouraging actresses to pick better roles. Or encouraging screenwriters to write more in-depth female characters. Nope, it's not to fire your agent for not getting you as much money as possible. Selma wants actors to take a pay cut. For all that fairness. To which actors responded, albeit privately:
Rob Schneider agrees. Kind of. Everyone should be paid equally for "equal" work. And Schneider is calling for his colleagues to take a stand.
Dude. I don't don't think feminists are going to be as triggered over something Schneider related to since The Hot Chick.
If there's something more maddening than celebrities complaining about not getting paid enough, I'm lost. Especially when the "equal work" isn't the size of your role or how much dialogue you have. You get paid based on how much money fans will pay to see you. You're paid based on how much money the producers think they can make off your name. Chris Pratt opens movies. People go to the movies to see Chris Pratt. Bryce Dallas Howard, not so much. Here's a quick mental exercise: you probably already know who Chris Pratt is and what he looks like. Our raving man and girl crushs notwithstanding. But Bryce Dallas Howard has you looking constipated.
Hence, Pratt gets paid more.
Not long ago, actress Julia Roberts commanded $20 million a picture. Right up there with Tom Cruise and Jim Carey. Before Jim Carey lost his mojo to make angry finger paintings. No one talked about "actresses need more money" back when Julia Roberts was smashing other actresses in the teeth. Because she, like Tom Cruise, had box office draw.
Whatever we think of her, Jennifer Lawerence might be on her way to commanding a pretty salary herself. That is if she can stop alienating audiences by talking smack about half the country who voted for Trump. Because JLaw has box office draw.
This shouldn't be a difficult concept to comprehend.
