School boards have been a point of contention among the American people and especially parents with children in our public schools for a couple of years now. Several scenes have played out in front of school board meetings: parents angrily voicing their concerns about curriculum, students decrying district policies, and government leaders calling for resignations. It's put a spotlight on boards to do right by their students and the parents of those students.

While this is the first time I think I've ever seen the Cabarrus County School Board, and while I don't know if the increased scrutiny is causing them to act or if they've always been proactive in support of the values held in their community, it looks like they are looking to rid their school district of 'filth' that can presently be found in the libraries.

Before reading a short excerpt from a single book in question, the board not only asked that the room be cleared of anyone under the age of eighteen but still broke out into a discussion regarding the need to read the book allow and disseminate what the board described as "filth." The entire video of the meeting is embedded below, comments concerning the book begin at 8:26. The reading of the book begins at 24:30. Yes, they broke into a conversation lasting nearly 20 minutes about whether the board should even read the book after children were asked to leave the room.

The excerpt is quick, but one can see why we wouldn't exactly want students reading it. Later in the meeting, a member of the board comments that two copies of the book are currently missing from the library, stating that they are probably under students' beds--likening the book to pornography.

While I'm not one to call for banning books, there's no doubt that we closely guard our school libraries to ensure certain material isn't allowed. No one would disagree that there shouldn't be any hardcore pornography magazines on the shelves. We probably wouldn't include copies of the Anarchist's Cookbook, either. Likewise, reviewing and pulling lewd literature from the shelves of public K-12 schools is a necessity.

Stock the shelves of universities with all the copies of Lolita you like, but it's not something I'd want my 11-year-old getting her hands on. Then again, the left wants drag queens performing for children, so I'm not surprised when they push for overtly explicit sexual content to be stocked.
