Senator Drops Mic With School Choice Question That Leaves Colleague Speechless: 'What Do I Tell Parents...?'
Nebraska is over 1,200 miles away. I know nothing about their politics other than Ben Sasse seems like a good dude. For all I know, the only issue I agree with Sen. Justin Wayne (D) over is school choice. But it's an important issue, made more important because of the pandemic. And I've never seen the argument framed like this.
Nebraska is debating Opportunity Scholarships, which would allow low-income families to send their children to private schools if they feel their public school is failing. Sen. Wayne came prepared. Sen. Ben Hansen, another Democrat, did not.
Sen. Justin Wayne (D): "Did you say it would take about 50 years to fix Omaha [schools]?"
Sen. Hansen (D): "Yes"
Wayne: "So what are we going to tell parents in the meantime when they are looking for choice?"
Hansen: "I mean, honestly, I don't know." pic.twitter.com/YWzRXYc41U

Sen. Wayne, in a previous debate, challenged his colleagues to stop sending their kids to private schools if public schools were perfect the way they are. No one took him up on it.
This video doesn't include Sen. Hansen's comments. I don't know the context or how he framed needing FIFTY FREAKNG YEARS to fix the Nebraska public school system. My guess is he said it matter-of-factually as if it was no big deal and made total sense. He wasn't supposed to be questioned on it. Hence, after Sen. Wayne asked what to tell parents who didn't have fifty years to wait for the system to be fixed, Hansen had nothing but awkward silence followed by a "dafuq if I know."
P.S. The answer to what you should tell parents is they should support your Bust the Teachers Unions Act.
A Democrat in Nebraska says it would take fifty years to fix the public schools. Imagine how long it would take in states like New York and California. Or, more precisely, imagine how long anti-choice politicians in those two states will claim.
