GOP Governor Sells Out to Teachers' Unions, Vetoes School Choice Bill
There is never a better time than right now for states to get serious with school choice. Legislation that allows a parent's tax dollars to follow the student where they go and is NOT dependent on the whims of teachers' union-controlled school boards. They've proven over the past two years to NOT have the best interests of your kids at heart.
There isn't a better place than Utah, the most conservative state in the country. If any state can pass this legislation with ease, it would be Utah. So, you have to wonder why Gov. Spencer Cox would threaten to veto a school choice bill. Then you see Cox got $75,000 from the teachers' unions, and it all makes sense.
The Hope Scholarship bill would "create a means-tested scholarship that could be used for private school tuition, home-school pods and home schoolers." The further your family falls below the poverty lines, the larger the scholarship you would receive. Unions hate it. People who care about the well-being of children love it.
Cox clearly doesn't care about the well-being of children. While vetoing the bill he claimed he'd be willing to support vouchers "at some point" but says that point is not now because "we are underfunding our schools." The National Education Association donated $75,000 to his 2020 election.
Where this excuse is really bunk is the "underfunding" part. Schools never seem to be "funded" and parents keep getting told to wait. A few states over, in Nebraska, State Senator Justin Wayne was told it will take FIFTY YEARS to fully fix schools in poorer neighborhoods where school choice scholarships are post popular. When Sen. Wayne asked his colleague what he's supposed to tell parents who are begging for this opportunity, his colleague said:
"I mean, honestly, I don't know."
Neither does Spencer Cox. But he has 75,000 reasons not to work too hard to figure it out. Red states like Utah should be ramming through legislation like this., not selling out to the leftist political organizations standing in the way of change.
