School Wants Ability to Track Parents' and Students' Social Media, Claim It's To Monitor 'Hate Speech'
Last year saw the rise of a sleeping giant, as parents began standing up against teachers’ unions and their various peons. See, parents didn’t previously know the kind of garbage being forced on their kids, but the push to keep kids at home doing remote learning let them see just what they were being taught.
Now, the teachers’ unions and their constituents are fighting to crack down on those parents. They don’t like when parents get uppity and question their authority. And who gave a bunch of “domestic terrorists” the right to tell teachers what to do anyway.
At the beginning of 2022, the National Education Association (NEA) called for social media companies to crack down on those pesky parents. They were talking a bit too much about Critical Race Theory in the schools, and the unions would rather such things remain on the down-low. But as social media has been slow to acquiesce to the NEA’s demands, one district is taking matters into its own hands.
The Fairfax County Public Schools have recently proposed a $200,000 contract for the purpose of social media management aimed at tracking what they call “social media threats, harassment, hate speech and bullying,” reports the Daily Caller. The program was revealed through documents uncovered by Parents Defending Education (PDE).
“The goal of the project is ‘to expand social media research program [sic] in order to detect [and] help deter any negative actions or consequences coming from social media which may be directed to racial groups or any students or teacher within FCPS.’”
However, and here’s the dangerous part, the things leftist-controlled schools, boards, and unions classify as harassment, hate speech, and bullying can include almost anything, and as PDE points out, they don’t bother to define it, either. And especially when the smallest microaggression can be taken as a threat, how far are they going to extend it?
“Parents raised concern that the contract amounts to wasteful spending actually designed to silence parents and combat the school district’s public relations failures, often pilloried on social media,” PDE stated.
The president of PDE Nicole Neily has some bad news for the district, though. “Unfortunately for FCPS, students and their parents have First Amendment rights too. The district intends to spend taxpayer funds to monitor and chill constitutionally-protected speech. […] Efforts to chill speech through Orwellian programs like this have rightly been challenged — and struck down — by courts around the country.”
Let’s hope this does get struck down. The last thing we need is for a hostile cohort of leftists to have even more power in the social media sphere to quash free speech.
