Seattle to Pull Stupid 'Head Tax' After Starbucks, Amazon Throw Down
Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got until your city's biggest job providers threaten to pack their sh!t and leave you. Swish swish, bish. That's what I believe happened in Seattle. After the deep-blue city council passed a crippling head tax on Seattle businesses, I imagine Jeff Bezos and Kevin Johnson of Starbucks, as well as some other economic heavyweights, threatened to take their billion dollar balls to a different sandbox. Because now Seattle's saying they'll likely repeal the stupid tax.
Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan and city council members on Monday said they would consider legislation to repeal a “head tax” on the city’s large businesses, just weeks after the measure’s passage drew public criticism from Amazon, Starbucks and others.
I live near Seattle, so this story matters to me on a personal level, but it's also a case in point of a crappy leftist government ruining everything. But to add some local insight "other" businesses may include: Microsoft, Nordstrom, Boeing, Costco, Capital One, etc, etc. Silicon Valley may boast big tech. But Seattle isn't made of financial chumps.
Backed by Durkan and seven of the nine members of the Seattle City Council, the repeal effort is underway despite the tax’s unanimous passage on May 14. The approved version of Seattle’s “head tax” had called for large employers to contribute $275 per employee annually in an effort to raise roughly $50 million per year toward efforts to address Seattle’s growing homelessness crisis through affordable housing and outreach efforts.
The head tax was another greedy grab for even more money from top businesses, thus making it more expensive for them to do business, in efforts to make housing more affordable, in a city with more taxes than smelly hipsters and hobos. If you think that doesn't make sense, neither did anyone else.
Seattle's city council made an oopsie. For Tacoma, just a coffee bean's flick south, tried enticing Seattle's frustrated businesses into their city.
I'm also assuming governors from states like Texas, Florida, heck, everywhere else, had Jeff Bezos on line one offering some sweet deals to get Amazon into their states.
Pushback, it works. More to the point, leftists continue to assume tax revenue is bottomless, and unless stopped by powerful outside forces, will tax a city into oblivion. There was real local concern about Seattle becoming the next Detroit. With idiots in government ruining a good thing by snatching even more money to pay for pet projects which would've surely failed like every other leftist pet project already has.
Until next time.
