2024 ElectionJanuary 29, 2024
Wait, did Snoop Dogg REALLY just come out in support of Donald Trump?
News shocked both the political world AND the culture on Sunday. Snoop Dogg announces his support of Donald Trump. Well, kinda. There was one sentence in an interview in a UK newspaper, and the Internets are doing Internets things.
The Sunday Times ran an interview with the D-O-Double-G titled "Snoop Dogg: ‘I have nothing but love and respect for Donald Trump’." This one paragraph is the entirety of where Trump was mentioned by Snoop. One sentence.
Snoop laughs. “Donald Trump?” he bellows. “He ain’t done nothing wrong to me. He has done only great things for me. He pardoned Michael Harris.” Harris, the co-founder of Snoop’s first label, Death Row, was in prison for drug offences. “So I have nothing but love and respect for Donald Trump.” I mention a post from 2012 in which Snoop weighed up reasons to vote for Barack Obama above Mitt Romney. Should we expect similar for Biden v Trump this year? “I may have to,” Snoop says, nodding. “Because there are mixed views on that, so I want to see what the people say."
It reeks of clickbait. Especially when you factor in this is the same Snoop who said in 2020, “If you like that n—a, you motherf–kin’ racist."
He also released albums and artwork that fantasized about Trump dying. So everyone might want to slow their roll celebrating Snoop's "change of heart" because there is a good chance a "clarification" of "what he really said" is coming. Just saying.
However, COULD Snoop have had a change of heart after four years of seeing what a disaster Joe Biden is? Yes. Absolutely. And the zeitgeist that's developing that it plays into is more interesting. While I am aware there is a niche audience on the right who is infatuated with everything Trump says and does, the apolitical middle sees a "lesser of two evils" election between two elderly gentlemen that they don't care for very much.
One of those elderly gentlemen, Americans have been struggling under for four years, whether it be the economy or on the border or getting their kids back in school.
The other elderly gentleman? Americans were doing much better under. They physically see the difference in their receipts and their bank accounts. Life was more affordable and there were no new wars, even though he kept (and keeps) getting attacked by a media Americans already didn't (and don't) trust.
If you don't have an ideological side, and those are your two choices, who are you choosing? Snoop could have had a change of heart and be seeing things the polls say a majority of other Americans are seeing things.
