South Korea is BEGGING people: Stop eating fried toothpicks for TikTok content
Internet trends convince people to do questionable things. And a lot of the time that involves eating things you normally wouldn't.
Remember the “Sleepy Chicken”? That is when you cook raw chicken in Nyquil. It not only sounds gross but is very dangerous because when you cook the cold medicine it creates some dangerous and toxic gas.
We also had the “Tide Pod Challenge”. Which was when a bunch of teenagers started eating Tide Pods. I don’t think that needs any more explanation about why that is extremely stupid.
Well, there is a new trend in South Korea - deep-fried toothpicks.
“A health warning from South Korea's food ministry has urged people not to eat fried toothpicks made of starch in a shape resembling curly fries, after the practice went viral in social media posts.
Video clips showing people consuming the deep-fried starch toothpicks with seasoning such as powdered cheese have racked up thousands of likes and shares on TikTok and Instagram.
‘Their safety as food has not been verified,’ the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said in a posting on Wednesday on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. ‘Please do not eat (them).’”
Look, I would never jump on this trend, but I think two things come to mind that everyone is thinking about after watching the video. One, this trend is not as bad as we thought. And two, they don’t look thaaaaaaat bad.
"’It's very crispy,’ one TikTok user said in a video, while crunching up fried toothpicks.”
They do look like they have a crunch and I have definitely seen people eat more revolting things. I also found it pretty interesting how the toothpick completely morphed into a new shape and lost its stab-like qualities. But these are “starch” toothpicks so I think when you fry normal toothpicks it doesn’t lose its pointy parts.
But the fact that we have people dumb enough to even come up with such an idea proves why we need a “contains nuts” warning on a bag of peanuts. This is why we need a label that says “do not eat” on things like toothpicks and Tide Pods. However, it is a "starch". How much different is it from a potato?
But to be fair, I know there are worse things out there that people eat and are government-approved. Likely for both the U.S. and South Korea. Although, I am sure the nutritional content is slim to none, are we really sure that something like Skittles is safer? Because I beg to differ. But either way, I will not be jumping on the “starch” toothpick bandwagon.
