Watch: Speaker Johnson makes unprepared CBS News reporter look foolish to her face, "Did you read what we filed?
I know we're supposed to be angry at Speaker Mike Johnson today because of the budget. But yesterday, he was our hero over the way he made CBS News journalismer Margaret Brennan look stupid. Johnson called her out to her face for not knowing what she was talking about.
We need to take a detour before we get there, though, because the story involves the 2020 election and the alleged denial of said election. CBS News has specific editorial guidelines about when to call someone an "election denier." The short and curlies of it are that if you at any point questioned anything about the 2020 Election, you are an election denier. But ONLY if you questioned the 2020 election.
If you are reading this, there is an above-average chance that you are an election denier according to CBS News editorial standards. But not these people:
Any of these people:
And don't even ask about these people:
Now that we've established what an election denier is, let's discuss Brennan doing a journalism and calling the Speaker of the House an election denier on the grounds that, in 2021, he circulated the Texas amicus brief challenging the 2020 election outcome in a number of states. What is the Texas amicus brief? Dafuq if Margaret Brennan knows.
JOHNSON: Did you read the brief? Did you get a chance to read what we filed with the Supreme Court?
KAREN: Well- I have read extensively some criticisms of that.
JOHNSON: You read commentary, but not what we submitted to the court.
Journalsiming!
Allow Speaker Johnson to explain further:
The argument that we presented to the Court, which is our only avenue to do so, was that the Constitution was clearly violated in the 2020 election. It’s Article 2, Section 1, and anyone can Google and read it for themselves. The system by which you choose electors to elect the President of the United States must be done by the individual states and the system must be ratified by the state legislatures. That is language- plain language out of the constitution. ... The Constitution was violated in the run up to the 2020 election. Not always in bad faith, but in the aftermath of Covid, many states changed their election laws in ways that violated that plain language. That's just a fact.
This act of journalisming is useful to take note of and study because Joe Biden has made it clear he is running this year for the 2020 Election. He can't run on anything that has happened after the 2020 Election. No one likes anything he's done and he's the most unpopular president at this point in his presidency in history.
Biden's team is also giving workshops to reporters to let them know what is expected of them. Having their facts straight, like reading an amicus brief they are attacking someone over, is clearly not expected.
