NBC News attempts a journalism on alleged outrage over a "cisgender" actor pretending to be trans on "Squid Game"
Netflix's Squid Game is shattering a glass ceiling in season 2 with the first ever transgender contestant in the squid games. However, the actor playing the trans character is a cisgender male instead of a transgender female. NBC News will have you know there are people bothered by this transgression in the unintentionally hilarious titled piece of content "Viewers call out 'Squid Game' for casting a cisgender actor as a trans character."
Yes. There is trans-adjacent outrage over someone pretending to be something they're not.
I only renewed my Netlifx account two days ago since RAW moves to Netlfix on January 6th, so I'd be lying if I said I am well-studied on Squid Games. My first thing to do was get caught up on Cobra Kai, which, as an aside... that last fight scene was ridiculous. Wikipedia defines Squid Games as a South Korean dystopian survival thriller television series that revolves around a secret contest where 456 players, all of whom are in deep financial hardship, risk their lives to play a series of deadly children's games for the chance to win money.
One of the contestants, Hyun-Ju, is trans and plans to use the prize money for her genital mutilation surgery. The rub is Hyun-Ju is played by a he, actor Park Sung-hoon, and not a she/her.
Neither “Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk nor Park responded to NBC News’ request for comment. Netflix confirmed that the show did work with trans and LGBTQ consultants while creating the second season, but in an interview with TV Guide, Hwang said it was “near impossible” to find a trans actor for the role.
Among the laziest of progressive outrages, it's when a non-marginalized actor pretends to be a marginalized character in a fictional work. In other words, they are ACTING. That's what acting has always been prior to people discovering how clickable it can be to accuse people of -isms and -phobias where neither exists.
Where this NBC News content truly shines, however, is that the "viewers" who are "calling out" the show? Two people. Not even the prerequisite three random idiots having the same dumb opinion. NBC News could only find two.
An X user with under 600 followers. And another X user that sounds like a SPAM account.
Actually, now that I know Body Count Token (1000X) is upset, I've changed my opinion. Everyone at Netflix and the producers of Squid Games should be embarrassed by their problematic casting decision.
