Steve Martin and Martin Short: Keep Politics Out of Stand-Up Shows
If you've never heard of Steve Martin or Martin Short, promptly go to Blockbuster find whichever streaming service currently has The Jerk and Captain Ron and bask in the greatness. Both have achieved comedic baller status.
I thought they couldn't be any greater. Boy, was I wrong. Steve and Marty just summed up what comedy is supposed to be about:
Steve Martin and Martin Short said when fans come to their stand-up show, they shouldn’t expect to hear President Donald Trump’s name because “we’re not here to preach.”“After the election, you started to hear comments from the audience, whether it was a yay or a boo, and we said, ‘We don’t want that. We’re not here to preach,'” he added.
“So we started limiting the divisive political material from the act because you get that on late-night TV,” Martin continued. “It’s not something you want to pay [for]. We’re just trying to be funny.”
“When it comes to politics, you don’t want to make half the audience feel like they’re inappropriate,” Short explained. “So even when we’re doing Jiminy Glick, we try to go back and forth.”
Well, it's about time somebody said it.
These two funny people are putting forward a crazy idea. The purpose of entertainment is to entertain. Though, if you ask a leftist, entertainment is but a vehicle for pushing whatever leftist cause is trending in the Twittersphere at the time. "Forget about escapism. Stand-up comedy is all about lesbian lectures on the importance of feminism."
This is why Steve and Marty will go down as two of the greats, and the two-bit leftist hacks who pose as comedians will continue to be sucktastic asshats who suck. When landing a political hit takes priority over saying things which make people laugh, it's no longer comedy. It's political grandstanding with the occasional punchline.
