Universal's new Super Mario Ride is a hit, but its size restrictions are triggering plus-sized people
Universal Studios in Los Angeles just launched Super Nintendo World, and with it, the highly anticipated Mario Kart ride, an augmented reality ride that travels through Bowser's castle. Its launch has been a widespread success, except for one major hiccup: it's not for the fats.
That's right, the ride has some extremely fatphobic guidelines that read, “This ride employs safety restraints which may restrict certain guests from riding due to body shape and size. Guests whose waistline is at least 40 inches or greater may not be accommodated on the ride and are strongly encouraged to try the test seat provided at the entrance of the attraction to ensure their ability to ride.”

This size restriction was not well-received by fat activists and Nintendo lovers alike. Self-described "food influencer" Rocco Botte tweeted, "Nothing but wonderful things to say about Super Nintendo World except this: the body size limitations on the Mario Kart ride are absolutely ridiculous. I’ve never had any issue fitting into any ride in my entire life, and I can BARELY fit into this one. Completely absurd."

To be fair, the fat activists have a point, since American men currently have an average waist size of 40.2 inches. Women aren't too far behind, at 38.7 inches. It seems America may soon be too fat for rides in general. And Universal rides have had several circumference issues in the past, notably on its 'Harry Potter' and 'Life of Pets' rides.
The good news is there's more than just this ride at Super Nintendo World. Guests who are a bit too fluffy to ride can enjoy Mario-themed pit stops, a Super-Mario gift shop, stop to meet their favorite Nintendo characters, and enjoy Nintendo-themed foods at the Toadstool Café. Though they may wanna take it easy on the café. Just saying.
