Watch: Will Trump's Tariffs Save America or Destroy the Economy?
President Trump unveiled his latest plan for tariffs at a “Make America Wealthy Again” event on Wednesday. Today’s show breaks down the numbers and countries hit hardest.
"There is no rational argument that they make," Crowder said. "No one would have an interest in taking their economy, guaranteeing that their legacy is tarnished forever and their party has no chance at the midterms."
According to Fox Business:
Trump's "Liberation Day" tariff announcement comes after the conclusion of the trading day for U.S. financial markets, which have been rattled by uncertainty over tariffs in recent weeks. The S&P 500 is down about 3.9% year to date and the benchmark index's gains since Trump's election in November have been erased amid concerns about a widening trade war.
The president indicated that aside from the reciprocal tariffs, the administration will establish a minimum baseline tariff of 10%.
According to The Daily Beast, Rachel Maddow claimed that Trump “is “purposefully crater[ing] the U.S. economy, and threatens to throw the entire world into a pointless trade war-fueled recession, if not depression.”
"April 2nd, 2025, will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn," Trump said in remarks from the Rose Garden. "In a few moments, I will sign a historic executive order instituting reciprocal tariffs around the world. Reciprocal — that means, they do it to us, and we do it to them. Very simple, can't get any simpler than that."
"They are basically tariffs imposed on a country according to whatever rate or penalty they charge us," Crowder said. "It's not just about the actual tariffs they put up, it's about a trade deficit too."
One of the biggest reasons Trump is doing this is because he is trying to reshore manufacturing regarding trade deficits and in response to China. Another important key point is that only goods originating in China will be affected.
"For 50 years, nothing has happened, and these people have taken advantage of the United States. Do you think one more ask was going to make a difference? We have tried it one way for over half a century; let's try it another way,” Crowder said.
