Unbelievable: A GOP senator who is up for reelection is the one who tried to sabotage Pete Hegseth's nomination at the last minute
When it came time to vote on Pete Hegseth's confirmation, three GOP senators were expected to vote no. That's okay because JD Vance would be the tie-breaking vote. However, Republican North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis was rumored to vote no at the last minute. This was odd, considering that President Trump was in North Carolina on the same day, pledging to help the North Carolinians that Trump's Democrat predecessor left behind.
The good news is that Tillis wound up voting yes. The bad news is that he tried to sabotage the nomination so that he didn't have to.
He's up for reelection in 2026 too. Keep that in the back of your mind.
If you recall, after Hegseth was voted out of committee, a new hit piece was released in which his brother's ex-wife made claims about Hegseth and his ex-wife that his ex-wife said weren't true. It reeked of the usual Democrat dirty tricks. It reeked even more after Hegseth was confirmed when the brother's ex-wive issued a statement: "A week ago, I was promised that my statement, on the record, would make a difference in the key vote."

OBVIOUSLY, this was a Democrat senator with a desperate last-minute attempt to collect a scalp before moving on to RFK Jr and Tulsi Gabbard, right? No, according to the Wall Street Journal. It was the REPUBLICAN Thom Tillis.
A key witness in the contentious Senate confirmation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was assured by Sen. Thom Tillis (R., N.C.) that her sworn statement would carry weight in last week’s vote and could convince Republican senators to oppose the nominee, according to people familiar with the events.
Tillis personally assured Danielle Hegseth in a call on Jan. 19, witnessed by two other people, that if she signed the statement testifying that she believed her former brother-in-law Pete Hegseth has an alcohol abuse problem and was abusive to his second wife, it would carry weight, and potentially move three votes—his own, along with the votes of Sens. Susan Collins (R., Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R., Alaska), those people said.
In a statement, Tillis didn’t dispute The Wall Street Journal’s reporting about the call.
I'm not sure what's worse. Is it a last-minute attempt at sabotaging Trump's agenda? Is it the fact that Tillis tried to sabotage it so that he wasn't forced to vote no and, therefore, not sabotage his own reelection efforts? Or is it the fact that after all this crap of dragging Hegseth's brother's ex-wife into it, he wound up before the 50th vote anyway because he didn't have the balls to stand on business?
It doesn't matter. Tillis is up for reelection in a southern state that Donald Trump carried by three points. If we are not going to primary him, even if it's only to send a message, then there is no point in having primaries.
