TikTok manipulates users to call Congress to oppose a ban, some users said they would kill themselves if America banned the app

TikTok has urged users of its platform to call Congress in protest over proposed legislation that could shut the software down. However, according to some reports, some American children have gone as far as to threaten “suicide” over this.
TikTok is urging users throughout the U.S. to call on Congress to stop a shutdown of the app amid new proposed legislation that could result in the app being banned.
On X, formerly Twitter, many users shared screenshots of notifications they received from TikTok on Thursday urging them to contact Congress and tell them to stop a possible shutdown of the app.
A spokesperson for TikTok confirmed to Newsweek that these notifications were sent out to users across the U.S. on Thursday.
I am a bit surprised by how bold a Chinese-owned company is in its attempts to meddle with American legislation.
The notification from TikTok said, "Congress is planning a total ban of TikTok. Speak up now - before your government strips 170 million Americans of their Constitutional right to free expression."
As if Chinese companies care the least bit about a “constitutional right to free expression,” considering human rights don’t exist over there. But I digress.
"This will damage millions of businesses, destroy the livelihoods of countless creators across the country, and deny artists an audience. Let Congress know what TikTok means to you and tell them to vote NO," the message from TikTok added.
The messages from TikTok come shortly after members of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) proposed legislation that seeks to have ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, divest the application or face a possible ban in the U.S.
"This is my message to TikTok: break up with the Chinese Communist Party or lose access to your American users," Republican Representative Mike Gallagher, who serves as the chairman of the House Select Committee on the CCP, said in a statement announcing the legislation. "America's foremost adversary has no business controlling a dominant media platform in the United States. TikTok's time in the United States is over unless it ends its relationship with CCP-controlled ByteDance."
According to reporter Matthew Foldi, there have also been confirmed reports of children threatening suicide if the platform is banned.
According to a report from Amnesty International, “TikTok has created an addictive platform, despite mounting evidence of the serious health risks associated with children’s compulsive use of social media. Examining further risks of TikTok’s content targeting, Amnesty International’s research shows that TikTok’s ‘For You’ feed can easily draw children and young people who signal an interest in mental health into “rabbit holes” of potentially harmful content, including videos that romanticize and encourage depressive thinking, self-harm and suicide”
If TikTok draws kids into an interest in self-harm, it is not surprising that some are threatening to hurt themselves over this.
If the Chinese government is spying on Americans and/or stealing data, the government has a fiduciary duty to get rid of that crap. On top of that, if the app is given “an all-access pass to user data” through “device tracking” and then changes the behavior of the app “ without users’ knowledge,” then that is arguably a national security risk. And on top of all that, American companies like Facebook don’t even have that ability (not that they should).
We don’t even need TikTok, considering we have Instagram shorts and all that.
I know that some people may lose millions of followers if the app is banned, but unfortunately, the world does not revolve around influencers and sometimes life is not fair. But honestly, I doubt that app will ever get banned.
It is insane that we even allowed a company from a country with massive human rights violations to access data from Americans so easily.
That said, what do you think? Should TikTok be banned?
