Tim Allen & Norm Macdonald on Being a Conservative in Show Biz [Video]
Remember when Last Man Standing was going to jump to CMT (see Surprise! ‘Last Man Standing’ In Talks For Revival With New Network and WOO! After Fan Pushback, ‘Last Man Standing’ May Not Stay ‘Canceled’ For Long)? Tim Allen tells Norm Macdonald it's not happening, plus offered some more insight into why he thinks Last Man Standing was canceled.
“I always wanted Last Man Standing to be like All in the Family. Archie Bunker pushed boundaries, but Carroll O’Connor was not that guy at all. Mike Baxter was a version of that guy. But there’s nothing more dangerous, especially in this climate, than a funny, likable conservative.”
I have the video time-stamped to this specific part, but I would highly suggest watching the whole podcast. Both Macdonald and Allen, while talking about comedy, kept on going back to what it's like trying to be a conservative in show business, and some of the people you have to deal with. Seems like conservatives are like Batman in Gotham. Christopher Nolan's Batman. Not George Clooney Nipple Costume Batman.
Allen even shared a story where it was suggested in a Last Man Standing pitch meeting that he make a joke about Donald Trump hating gay people. When asked if Trump hating gay people was true, a liberal writer told him, "Well, everyone knows it. He looks like the type who hates gay people."
Good to know "hating gay people" is now as recognizable as being a metrosexual.
Obviously, these people all write for the late night shows as well.
