Toby Keith, patriot and county music icon, loses his battle with cancer at age 62
Gutted to wake up to the news this morning of Toby Keith, 62, passing away after a battle with stomach cancer. His family made the announcement on his social media platforms that he passed peacefully on February 5th, sounded by his family, fighting his fight with grace and courage until the very end.
Of course, the way Instagram's algorithm works, the next time I opened the app up I saw this post from the day before of Toby's last performance, about "getting back at it" after the end of another weekend.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm about three things: day drinking, pro wrestling, and country music. Unfortunately, I live in a part of the country that doesn't get many country music concerts, but I did get to see Toby Keith. He played the area while touring for the 25th anniversary of Should Have Been A Cowboy. To this day, it's one of the best shows I've seen. Toby put on a killer performance running through his greatest hits for over two hours.
I lost my mom after an eight-year battle with cancer this year. Between that, her first bout with it, and losing my dad to it as well, I know firsthand how it ravages not only your body but your spirit. For that alone, seeing that Toby Keith returned to the stage after battling stomach cancer with a two-and-a-half-hour set last July was both an amazing and emotional sight.
The fact that he still had that redneck in him until the end is what makes you yell, "hell yeah, brother." As he wrapped up his pro-America anthem "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue," he made sure his audience knew to never apologize for being patriotic. And to the haters, he had two words and one finger for them: "F*ck 'em."
“Never apologize for being patriotic. F*ck em.”

Though while "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue" is one of his more popular songs, if we're all being honest with ourselves, everyone knows what Toby's best song is:
Red Solo cup, you’re not just a cup. You’re my friend.
Thank you for being my friend. pic.twitter.com/LVO7HJflBu

Godspeed, Cowboy. Love and prayers to your family and friends, as well as all the artists you've inspired over your career.
Since the music is what matters, here are my five favorite Toby Keith songs.
High Maintenance Woman (2007)
Whiskey Girl (2003)
Broken Bridges (2006)
You Ain't Much Fun (1994)
Red Solo Cup (2011)
