As Trump wows the UFC, Bernie Sanders goes on cranky old man rant at Coachella about the oligarchy
There are right ways for politicians to reach the culture, and then there are derpy ways to do it. This past weekend provided us with a perfect contrast of the two styles. In the red corner, we had Donald Trump showing up at a UFC event. In the blue corner, Bernie Sanders wandered on stage during the middle of Coachella. On a related note, Trump is over bigly with the American people while Democrats have never been less popular or more culturally irrelevant.
Let's start with Trump. It's a familiar scene. He walks out. The crowd erupts in "USA" chants. He shakes hands with people. America is made great again. Bros proclaim "we are so f*cking back" on Twitter.

Meanwhile, 3000 miles or so away, people weren't sure if they were tweaking on ketamine or if someone's grandpa wandered out on stage to yell at the clouds. Turns out, both!
Yall did Bernie Sanders dirty! Now this is a leader! Bernie showed up to Coachella to remind the youth of what matters! #COACHELLA2025 pic.twitter.com/CEBeEjQic0

You know the spiel. Blah blah blah, billionaires. Derpity derpy oligarchy derp derp. Something 1% boring, boring. His overarching message: "This country faces some very difficult challenges and the future of what happens to America is dependent on your generation."
Yes, America is dependent on the generation that has to finance their glamping trip.
NEW: About 60% Of Coachella attendees financed their tickets to attend the festival, according to Billboard.
If you need to take out a loan to go to Coachella, you shouldn’t be going to Coachella.

Though, in fairness to the festival, it did have its moments.

Here's the key difference between the two. While both politicians made their appearance felt at an apolitical event, Trump didn't interrupt the audience to lecture them. He didn't grab the microphone to ramble about his big beautiful bill or why everyone loves his tariffs. He just showed up. Instead of acting like he is "just like you" as politicians do, he WAS just like us, enjoying a popular sporting event. Trump looked, for lack of a better descriptor, cool.
Bernie, on the other hand, was all like uncool. He came out to interrupt everyone while they were stoned out of their minds and making increasingly regretful sexual decisions, to not only rant about politics, but to perform his same rant that young Americans have tuned out. He was the walking embodiment of the "how do you do fellow kids" meme. How many audience members do you think are waking up this morning remembering that Bernie was there, let alone were moved by anything he said?
Trump wins once again. If you are keeping score at home, no, we are not tired of it yet.
