"The sentence would have been much longer had you actually committed a crime.” That was one of the last things Samuel Melia heard from the judge who threw him in prison for being politically incorrect.
Sticker art is when a message or image is publicly displayed. This is referred to as “stickering” However, this is considered a jailworthy offense when the sticker has a message that authorities in the U.K. despise.
A 34-year-old man named Samuel Melia was sentenced to two years in prison for “inciting racial hatred.”
Melia was the head of the Telegram Messenger group Hundred Handers, a social media channel that generated racist and anti-immigration stickers that were printed off and displayed in public places.
The stickers contained "ethnic slurs" about minority communities which displayed a "deep-seated antipathy to those groups", the court heard.
He was also found guilty of “encouraging racially-aggravated criminal damage.”
It is unclear what "damage" he committed.
The court also heard Melia had an "obsessive interest" in Sir Oswald Mosley, who founded the British Union of Fascists in the 1930s, and that he was attempting to "peddle the same antisemitism".
Melia had a poster of Hitler in his garage, a book by Mosley in his bedroom and it was found that much of the material Hundred Handers published was "xenophobic, nationalistic and vitriolic".
For the record, racism is bad in all forms and it should be condemned to the fullest extent that is possible. Nonetheless, I am having trouble seeing what crime was committed. However, the U.K. is not a country that takes kindly to freedom of thought and I think we all know where this is going.
Judge Bayliss said: "For the first time since the 1930s, a real risk of gross, potentially violent, antisemitism is becoming normalized on our streets.
"It has been used before to tear at the heart of Western democracy.
"It must not be allowed to do so again."
I am sure you are wondering what the stickers read that could have possibly “been used to tear at the heart of Western democracy.” Don’t worry, I found what some of these “potentially violent” messages said.
"Never apologize for being white," and "It's okay to be white." Other stickers included the messages “Diversity did not build Britain,” and “Nationalism is nature.”
Technically, nothing in those stickers said anything incorrect.
But the woke judge thought that these messages proved his “mindset is that of a racist and a white supremacist” and that he holds "Nazi sympathies" and is an "antisemite."
Yes, he really said all of that in court.
But the point is, the only crime he committed was that he dared to challenge the politically correct narrative. And the only mistake he made was that he believed he had the freedom to think for himself.
What did he is logically equivalent to a Mexican saying “It’s okay to be Mexican.” And it is okay, just like it is okay to be white. But the court claimed it was not his speech but his “intent.”
Even if you think his views are seriously abhorrent, that does not change the fact that he shouldn't be in prison for posting controversial messages.
America is lucky to have a First Amendment (for now). But pay attention, because as the judge said, his “sentence would have been much longer had [he] actually committed a crime.”
The right to have a politically incorrect opinion is not something Americans should take for granted. Because as we have just learned, you can be imprisoned for not committing a crime.
