Priorities? Vets Wait Months for Treatment. VA Hospitals Spend $20 Million on Art...
VA medical centers seem to be the purgatory of healthcare service. Malpractice has veterans waiting months before they get treatment. It's a tedious delay that some vets don't even live though to see. The VA's crapstorm of negligence isn't exactly new, but this report is. Forbes recently uncovered that amid all the waits and red tape, Veterans Affairs has spent millions of dollars on art and decor...
The Veterans Affairs administration doled out $20 million over the past 10 years to snap up high-end art to fill their treatment centers across the country according to a new report.Forbes organization Open The Books went through records... reporting that the administration 'bought Christmas trees priced like cars and sculptures that cost more than five-bedroom homes.' All this while thousands of veterans died while waiting to be treated by doctors.
The most shocking findings in the report are the $21,000 spent on an artificial Christmas tree for one treatment center, and the $670,000 that was spent on two pieces of art for the Palo Alto Polytrauma and Blind Rehabilitation Center. Those two pieces will likely not be appreciated by veterans at that facility, who are unable to see the art.
So let's recap: the VA is struggling to properly service its patients. Veterans end up waiting weeks, even months, to get seen by doctors. Their system becomes super backlogged. They're probably understaffed or in need of new management. Solution? Art. Buy all the art.
First off, you've failed if you spent anything upwards of $20 on art. Especially when said art is being bought for, say, a hospital... Not an art gallery. Doubly so when that money comes out of the hospital's budget, not your magical, cash-crapping posterior. The thing is, businesses usually adhere to something called "financial priorities." For example, hiring more medical staff? Solid investment. Shoveling out ungodly amounts of dough for a fake plastic tree? Not okay. Also...
See, this is why people don't want the government butting into their healthcare. Bureaucracy + healthcare = a bad time (see NEW REPORT: ObamaCare Numbers Are Getting Worse and Worse...). Just ask anyone who's had the misfortune of dealing with the VA. Or take a gander at how the government tends to allocate resources (YOUR TAX DOLLARS: White House Plans to Announce First National Gay Monument). Thanks to government mismanagement, veterans may be doomed to eternally sit in VA waiting rooms... But at least now those waiting rooms have abstract, trashcan art.
Speaking of healthcare...
