Federally, there is no “official” language in the U.S., even though the majority of people speak English. But you are not allowed to say that that is America’s native tongue because that would be “racist.”
Considering we have no "official" language, that may or may not be why Ohio Dem. Representative Ismail Mohamed delivered his victory speech exclusively in Somali.
Like other Somali representatives, Mohamed focused much of his campaign on representing the significant Somali population in his area.
Columbus, Ohio is home to more than 45,000 Somalis - the largest population in the country aside from the district in Minnesota that is represented by Ilhan Omar.
Ahead of the election, the representative released a campaign video on Somalia's state-owned TV channel.
In the ad, he discusses his previous achievements, which include getting a street in Ohio named for Sayyid Mohamed Abdulla Hassan, the man who is considered the father of Somali nationalism.
He also spoke about the growing number of Somali representatives in the US government. He called the group a 'tight knit organization' who even communicate via group chat.
Mohamed beat another Somali immigrant on Tuesday’s Primary.
“This is just another example of the West kowtowing to Islam,” Crowder said. “This is nothing more than the kowtowing to an ideology that would love nothing more than to destroy our constitution.”
An English man was intimidated at work for eating his lunch during Ramadan. In Times Square, Muslims gather to pray at the beginning of Ramadan. A professor was also fired after a Muslim student complained that she showed Islamic art while teaching a class on global art.
“If you demand that other people not eat because of a holiday, leave. How about that?” Crowder said.
Where else can you give a victory speech in a language not normally spoken by the people of that country?
