While Joe Biden was slurring and angry old man'ing his way through another NBC News video (while also misgendering his DEI hire Secret Service Director he doesn't remember talking to) Donald Trump made his first public appearance after last weekend's failed assassination attempt. Spoiler: It was to a tremendous ovation.

The only disappointing thing is he came out to "God Bless the USA" and not "Many Men (Wish Death)." There are rumors that the RNC is working with 50 Cent to make an appearance, so there is always Thursday.

The thing I noticed right away was that this looked like an entirely different person. Trump looked like he was struggling to hold it together without crying. There's a small list of events when it is acceptable for a man to cry. There are three: when his mother dies, when he gives away his daughter at her wedding, and when his favorite team finally wins the championship. A fourth is when he makes his first public appearance after successfully and accidentally dodging an assassin's bullet and being lucky to be alive.

I wasn't the only one who felt they were looking at a different Trump.

I'm very curious to see what "Trump" we get from this point forward. Near-death experiences change a person and the failed assassination attempt could not be more near death. Trump is alive because he happened to turn his head. A fraction of a split second earlier and yesterday's appearance was a memorial.

It's easy to hide behind social media posts and videos playing golf. It's different when you have to speak for the first time on Thursday. Or when you hold your rally back. And at least in the case of the former, Trump said everything changed after Saturday. “It is a chance to bring the country together. I was given that chance.”

What does that look like going forward? The Democrats aren't going to change. The White House made that perfectly clear on Monday. Two days after a bullet grazed Trump's ear, CNN was calling for Democrats to turn their "line of fire" on Trump.

Haters and losers will always be haters and losers. I imagine they matter less today to Trump than they did before Saturday afternoon.

His address to the nation on Thursday could be a game-changer in more ways than one.
