What is Bluesky and why should I care?
Well, I did it so you don’t have to. I created an account on Bluesky. (Bloo-ski? Blue sky? I’m going with Blue Sky pronunciation).
Bluesky is supposed to be an X alternative and it’s actually kind of funny because Elon Musk is getting the Voldemort treatment as He Who Must Not Be Named. I don’t have any strong feelings about Elon. I like his approach to free speech. He made Twitter fun again. And I love his attitude about eliminating wasteful spending in government. Over on Bluesky, however, they spend a large part of their day coping and seething about Elon and X. (You can get this shirt at CrowderShop.com. 10 out of 10. Would recommend.)
Developed by Jack Dorsey in 2019 as a way to “decentralize” Twitter, Bluesky went into public beta stage in 2023. The thing that makes it different from X/Twitter, is that users can create their own servers where they can make their own rules.
Let me guess: free speech is the first one they get rid of. Of course, the terms of service will ban accounts for the as-usual undefined concept of “hate or extremist conduct.” It’s not like people on Bluesky are calling for the assassination of anyone, I’m sure.
AI generated image, but c'mon. It's pretty accurate...
People like Joy Reid and Don Lemon have promised to delete their X accounts. Bette Midler and Jamie Lee Curtis have already done it. Don Lemon is already on Bluesky. So far, he’s only made a few posts and they’re mostly videos of him in his car. But he’s in the back, not the front for some reason.
He hasn’t even put up a banner yet. Amateur.
Keith Olberman is over there, too, but he hasn’t delivered on deleting his X account yet.
Joy Reid is over there, too, but most of her posts are just reposting people screenshotting X posts.
Joy, if Bluesky succeeds in destroying X, what will you do? All your content will be gone!
Yes, the very leftists who accuse X of being a right-wing echo chamber have gone and created a home of their own, a leftist meltdown echo chamber where everything is terrible all the time and we’re all going to die, every cabinet appointment made by Trump is the end of the world, (here’s some furry crap) and I’m just so glad people over here know how to read books!
Because it wouldn’t be a leftist echo chamber without fetishes and elitism.
There’s a problem, though. There isn’t really any way to verify anyone is who they say they are. I paid for my blue checkmark on X, sure, but they still asked for an image of my drivers’ license. So you end up with accounts like these.
Because it seems like these real media outlets aren’t exactly ready to take the plunge yet. Or lift off. Depending on what sort of Bluesky metaphor you’d like to use. And there are a lot of posts like this:
Sure, Seth, if that is your real name, because I have no idea if you are who you say you are. Bluesky is burning down X so much so that instead of posting original content, you memed about how you’re winning.
Let’s take a look at the numbers:
On November 13th, Bluesky celebrated gaining 1 million users since the election! Wow!
That brings their grand total up to 14.5 million total users.
X has over 500 million.
That’s it, everyone. It’s over. Pack it up and go home. Over 115,000 users deactivated their X accounts after the election. Wait…
Those numbers don’t match up. That means people made a Bluesky account without deleting their X account. Are they allowed to do that?
Let’s see if we can set up a polymarket for how long it takes Don Lemon and Joy Reid to come back to X. Because it’s likely they’ll be back in a year. Maybe two. Long odds, probably four.
Threads is also trying to say they’re in the mix, but I’m not creating a Threads account and I’m going to assume it’s similar to X and Bluesky. People have accounts on both platforms.
Now, I am absolutely not suggesting you go over to Bluesky and troll them. That is not a thing I would ever suggest you do. Don’t take any moderate or right leaning opinions anywhere near Bluesky.
And not just because it doesn't work half the time I tried to use it.
But, seriously. Let the Left have their echo chamber. Let them cope and seethe. Let them stew in their own juices. Their model is ultimately unsustainable because revolutions eat their own. Bluesky will survive for a while. It might even appear to be flourishing. One day, and that day will come sooner than they hoped, they will turn and rip each other to shreds.
Let them.
They will never understand why they lost. They will never change. They will get more and more extreme. And, honestly? I’m here for it.
Unrelated, can anyone recommend any good books on Soviet Communism?
In the meantime, now that the election’s over, I’ll go back to talking about bad movies, Detroit Lions football, and classical music on X as was intended. I might even write a fat joke or two about JB Pritzker. He’s the new Chris Christie.
Later, nerds.
