Brigid Klyne-Simpson is overweight. Massively overweight. Rotund. The kind of fat you would make "yo' mama so fat jokes" about. Or as fat activists would call her, perfect just the way she is. But Klyne-Simpson wants to get in better shape. She attempted to join a women's only gym but had her membership rejected.

The rub is Brigid used to be a man. There are women who have always been women who take issue with having a used-to-be-a-man in their safe space. I know, right? 2019 called and they want their passe definitions of gender back!

Brigid used to work out at a men's gym (before he became a she) but was uncomfortable around so many buff guys. It wasn't until he realized they were trans and became a she that Brigid realized what the problem was. Brigid thought they found the perfect fitness center to live -- her -- best authentic self. Then came a dreadful phone call.

I got a call…basically saying, ‘Sorry, we made a mistake, you’re not actually allowed to be here, but you’re more than welcome to use the co-ed facility." I just hung up, because I mean, I was extremely devastated, there’s really no other word for it.

The gym's owner felt Brigid would be better served at their co-ed gym. The gym has gender-neutral changing rooms in the name of inclusivity. The owner understands Klyne-Simpson's disappointment, but they are trying to find balance.

We also have to worry about the young girls that this gym is set up for them and the women, and how are their parents are going to feel that they’re in there, then this person walks in with a male voice and big person.

It's a dilemma many in 2023 find themselves wrestling with. Do you side with the comfort of the grown adult who (presumably) still comes with their factory-installed genitalia? Or do side with, as the gym's owner says "the comfort of the young girls that are working out there that might not feel comfortable?"

Brigid Klyne-Simpson is of the belief you side with her comfort. She is considering filing a Human Rights complaint in order to force educating the gym that trans women are women. Even though critics continue to say "...uh, no they're not."
