The World Health Organization (WHO) is gearing up for a year of strangeness made medical. They've invented a new mental disorder while dismissing an old one. Because virtue points.

In what can only be described as a sign of the times, the World Health Organization has recognized a new kind of mental health condition. It’s a familiar ailment, though some of us may be slow to call it a medical condition. It’s called gaming disorder, and it’s characterized by “a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior,” or more simply, an addiction to gaming.

Folks who suffer from the disorder are said to have “impaired control over gaming,” which is to say an inability to control the frequency, intensity, duration, and context of their habits.

And I have impaired control over chocolate cake. Meaning, when I see it, I have to put it in my mouth. I wouldn't call it an addiction though, because "addiction" is just psych lingo for poor self-control. Don't rage at me.

WHO also notes that those who prioritize video games over “other life interests and daily activities” and continue to escalate the amount that they play “despite the occurrence of negative consequences” are also showing symptoms of the newly classified disorder.

Good news, my gaming obsessed cousin can now apply for disability to continue his "uncontrollable addiction." Bad news, taxpayers could be paying for it.

But wait, it gets better. Guess what? WHO wants to declassify gender dysphoria as a mental condition:

The World Health Organization is moving toward declassifying transgender identity as a mental disorder in its global list of medical conditions, with a new study lending additional support to a proposal that would delete the decades-old designation.

The change, which has so far been approved by each committee that has considered it, is under review for the next edition of the W.H.O. codebook, which classifies diseases and influences the treatment of patients worldwide.

“The intention is to reduce barriers to care,” said Geoffrey Reed, a psychologist who is coordinating the mental health and behavior disorders section in the upcoming edition of the codebook, called the International Classification of Diseases, or I.C.D.

I see. So it's okay to increase "barriers for care" for people obsessed with World of Warcraft. But men who want to cut off their own penises should go untreated. WHO wants to stigmatize people obsessed with their animated avatars. But remove all stigma from cross-dressing trannies who cut up their own bodies to look like something they're not. So it's worse to have a digital obsession than a real life one?

Gamers: get back into the real world or be labeled mentally ill. But men who think they're ladies, please carry on with your Prada pumps?

Methinks there's some politics afoot.
