Volunteers Feed Homeless Without a Permit. Government Destroys the Food
If you watch a lot of cable news, you get the impression the world is a nasty, ugly place full of hateful douche-a-sauruses. In reality, there's a whole crap ton of people out there willing to step up and lend a hand to their fellow man. Take these people for instance. They cooked up some food and set out to feed the homeless.
The government, not to be outdone, stepped in and put the kibosh, and bleach, on the whole thing. Seriously:
The food was going to be distributed by a group called Free Hot Soup KC. The Kansas City Star said the food, which included home-cooked chili, foil wrapped sandwiches and vats of soup, was destroyed on Sunday, Nov. 5, during a coordinated sting at several parks where volunteers had gathered. The Health Department said the group did not have a permit and was putting people at risk.
"E. coli or salmonella or listeria can grow in the food," department director Rex Archer said. "And then you give that to homeless people who are more vulnerable, they will end up in the ER and even die from that exposure."
Gee, I wasn't aware paying the government for the privilege to hand out sandwiches magically eliminates E. Coli and Salmonella.
The mayor also agreed with the Health Department, tweeting that "Rules are there to protect the public's health, and all groups must follow them, no exceptions."
You know what else is bad for people's health? Starvation.
Here we had people showing the initiative to step up and feed the homeless. All without using stolen funds tax dollars. Alas, the government didn't get their cut, so they poured bleach on perfectly good food and dismissed the homeless with empty stomachs. After all, that's the "caring" thing to do.
This, folks, is the perfect example of how government is the problem, not the solution. Forget about private citizens lending a helping hand to those in need. Nope, we're just supposed to sit idly by and fork over more and more of our greenbacks to the government. They'll see to it everyone gets what they need.
Except it never works out that way:
