New York City Phases Out Armed Resource Officers at Schools
The country is debating school safety. Specifically, armed personnel in schools (see Florida Shooting Victim’s Dad Responds to Those Against Arming Teachers and WATCH: Badass Teacher Tells ABC Why She Carries a Glock, Why Other Teachers Should Too). There's a radical belief that we should protect our children the same we we protect our politicians and celebrities. Of course, leave it to NYC Mayor Bill DoucheBlasio to go it the opposite direction. Instead of more armed personnel, let's remove the trained resource officers who are already there.
The last NYPD cops assigned full-time to New York City public schools are being moved out — despite nationwide calls for heightened security in the wake of last month’s Florida shootings...Mayor de Blasio’s new community policing units will visit schools while patrolling the neighborhood, according to the NYPD. School safety agents are stationed at all schools, but are not armed.“My colleagues think it’s outrageous — and really stupid,” teacher Arthur Goldstein said. “We’re not enthusiastic about arming teachers, but we liked having a cop around.”
“It’s ridiculous,” Lovett said. “All over the country they are telling you ‘arm the teachers, get an officer in your school.’ New York City had a designated officer and they are actually cutting the program . . . they are making us less secure.
In New York, Staten Island City Councilmen Steven Matteo and Joe Borelli, and Borough President James Oddo, have asked de Blasio for armed officers in all of the city’s 1,700 schools — something the mayor has long argued would cost too much.
So, in Bill de Blasio's warped pea brain, free tampons in schools are a must, but armed security is an unnecessary expenditure.
To be clear, I've got nothing against community policing. It's a good way to help bridge some of the mistrust between the police and the inner cities. The problem is it doesn't come close to having a trained, armed po-po at school around the clock. Resource officers who're cocked, locked, and ready to break leather on any mass-murdering asshat who comes busting through the door.
It's one thing to not increase security in the wake of all these mass shootings. It's another thing entirely to tell the current officers to hit the bricks. I don't think you'll find a person, left or right-wing, who would tell you mass shootings aren't a major problemo.
I just hope one of those community policing hombres is nearby the next time another loony pops off.
